About Savage Mouse Games

Savage Mouse Games creates historically authentic tabletop miniatures games that are easy to learn, deep to master, and built to bring people together.

We have been creating games with the soul of a story and the mathematics of a simulation since 2023. Savage Mouse Games creates games that anyone can sit down, pick up, and play, and then play again and again. We are a small group based in Auckland, New Zealand, relying on the miracle of the internet to bring our creative team together from across the world. Our first game is Angels One Six, the WW2 miniatures dogfighting game, with the first release being set in the Battle of Britain.

Phil Yates

Phil has spent over two decades designing some of the most successful tabletop wargames in the world. As the senior designer at Battlefront Miniatures, he helped shape Flames of War into one of the most played historical miniatures games on the market, and brought the same rigour to WWIII: Team Yankee. His reputation rests on a simple but demanding philosophy: every game must be genuinely fun to play, tell compelling stories, and be historically grounded and mathematically sound.

That pursuit of depth without complexity led Phil to found Savage Mouse Games—a label for games he felt compelled to make, rather than games someone asked him to. The obsession that drives Savage Mouse Games is the same one that had a younger Phil creating bedroom-floor dogfights with his model aircraft: the belief that great games should put you in the moment, not just simulate it from a distance.

Angels One Six is the fullest expression of that belief to date. Drawing on years of research into pilot accounts, aeronautics, and aerial tactics, Phil has built a game where real-life aircraft and tactics combine with the physics of flight to shape every decision. It's the game he's wanted to make since those carpet-tile dogfights, and it's finally ready to fly.

Ian Burgos

Ian is officially Phil's right-hand man at Savage Mouse Games, and unofficially the person who does everything Phil hasn't thought of yet. From chasing down manufacturers for gaming mats and merchandise, to hunting out podcasts and wargames clubs, to helping bewildered convention-goers learn the game and find the newsletter signup sheet—if something needs doing, Ian's doing it. He's even creating our theme tune, because apparently that's a thing now.

A Spaniard by origin, Ian has lived an eclectic life—teaching English in Korea, working in banking and healthcare administration, and moonlighting as a singer in a band. It turns out that combination of patience, organisation, and performance experience is exactly what a scrappy games startup needs.

He was also, it should be noted, an early Flames of War player back in Spain—which means he and Phil go way back in spirit, even if they only recently joined forces. These days Ian collects Flames of War armies, Star Wars Legion miniatures and Blood Bowl teams, paints to a standard that won him Best Painted at Panzerschreck 2025 for his Team Yankee Canadians in UN colours, and brings the same care and enthusiasm to everything Savage Mouse Games does.
